Coyote soccer falls on the road to Oral Roberts
Following a historic win at home to rival South Dakota State University, the USD hit the road for a one game road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on Oral Roberts. The Coyotes lost 0-1 to the Golden Eagles last season when they made a trip to Vermillion and the Coyotes looked to flip the script this time out.
Early on, the Coyotes looked strong. In just the fifth minute, the Coyotes found the back of the net on a shot from 40 yards out by redshirt freshman midfielder Kellee Willer. USD continued pushing the pace early in the game, sophomore forward Sammie Villwock had her shot blocked in the 11th minute and the Coyotes would end the first 45 with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Golden Eagles ran away with it. Another shot from Willer was saved in the 47th minute and freshman forward Taryn LaBree was issued a yellow card in the 56th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Parker Rytz was put on the defensive with three saves in three minutes as the Golden Eagles pressed forward.
In the 75th minute the Oral Roberts attack finally broke through with an equalizer from inside the box. In the 78th minute the Golden Eagles notched another goal from inside the box to go up 2-1. The final nail in the Coyotes’ coffin would come in the 84th minute when Oral Roberts scored their third goal to go up 3-1 with just six minutes to play. Villwock got a shot off in the 85th minute that was saved and that would be it for USD, as they fell to Oral Roberts 1-3.
The win dropped USD to 3-13-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in Summit League play.
The Coyotes will wrap up the final two games of the regular season at home. They take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday at 3 p.m. at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex and finish up Summit League play on Sunday against Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne at noon. The Coyotes defeated both teams 2-0 last season.
