Know how to keep cool with your schedule

Knowing yourself means knowing how to juggle classes, work, homework and that lovable relaxation time.

Often, this can be difficult when a student’s mind is in the moment and can’t concentrate on what needs to get done that day or even the following week.

Another part of the problem is procrastination. Students often forget about that one assignment, thinking they’ll get to it later, when suddenly, before they know it, it’s due the next day.

I usually try to think about it this way: how long do I sleep? How long does it take me to eat? How long does it take me to get to class?

I also try to consider how long it takes me to complete my homework.

When I first started college and I had a ton of assignments due over the next couple of weeks, I would start to panic that I wouldn’t be able to get everything done in time, until I decided to write everything down.

I remember that once I looked at the due dates, and made a checklist for myself, I started to realize that I didn’t need to feel overwhelmed, because I would be able to work on those assignments little by little until they were completed.

Knowing how long it takes to complete any task helps in strategizing a set schedule that, over time, can become more flexible.

Figuring out a schedule that works gets easier with time. No singular person is going to have the exact same schedule as the person they’re sitting next to.

For example, some people don’t need a full eight hours of sleep, while others need 12.

Visual aids don’t just add value to the classroom. Having a calendar that shows what’s going on that day, even every hour of that day, allows for better time management and less stress.

Knowledge is key, and so is understanding when some things need to be taken off that plate, for now.

If there’s a way to make the schedule lighter, then it’s important to figure out what events in the calendar need to be taken off. School work isn’t the only factor to consider in a student’s life: work, school clubs and even socializing also take up time.

While school clubs are fun, often they are unnecessary, as are parties and hanging out with friends every spare chance. Prioritizing is essential in creating a more manageable schedule.

For a lot of students, the juggling act between school and work, for those who do work, is incredibly stressful because it feels like there’s no time for anything and the plate for the day is already overflowing.

Looking at the big picture is often what’s daunting to students because all that’s seen is a huge mountain of seemingly never-ending work.

Once that work is broken down into more manageable chunks that can easily be whittled away over time, the amount of stress pertaining to school dissipates and fades.
