Instant ramen is bad for your health
Instant ramen noodles are enjoyed by many. They’re cheap and only take a few minutes to get ready. They are the perfect, convenient meal for college students.
Momofuku Ando, the inventor of instant noodles, wanted to create something people in his country could easily purchase. They were supposed to be something that was easily accessible. Ando wanted to create food that could sustain human life.
When instant noodles were first produced, they were five times the cost of fresh noodles and were considered luxury food. Now, they are a signature cheap food in grocery stores.
In moderation, instant noodles are fine to eat. But having them too often can cause serious health risks.
Instant ramen has lots of sodium, and this can cause an increased risk for heart disease, stomach cancer and strokes.
The noodles are also flash-fried in palm oil, which, compared to other oils, has high amounts of saturated fats.
The waxy layer on the noodles can be bad for your health too. Your body uses lots of energy to digest the waxy layer of the noodles, and this process can sometimes take up to three days.
Of course, you can make the noodles like the package instructs, but there are tons of different ways to prepare the noodles to make them more filling or better for you.
Instant noodles were cooked before they were dried, so you can eat them without cooking them. Doing this gives you more of the nutrients instant ramen does have, such as iron and vitamin B.
Adding fresh ingredients is a great way to make the noodles more nutritional. You can add things like vegetables, meat or seasonings.
One of the easiest ways to decrease the sodium content is by throwing out the seasoning packet and using your own herbs and spices. But if you don’t season the noodles, you can add them to nearly anything.
Personally, I like to add an egg to the boiled noodles—it makes the broth creamier and thicker. If you want other recipes or ideas for adding things to ramen, the internet is a great place to go.
Ramen noodles on their own are not a good food to live on. They are a tasty snack for certain occasions and should not be eaten regularly. Instant ramen and Cup Noodles will continue to be common food items for college students, but there are always ways to reduce their dangerous health effects.
