The Volante’s Athlete of the Week: Lydia Knapp
Lydia Knapp wasn’t satisfied with one gold medal, so she ended the weekend with two which is what earned her the title of The Volante’s Athlete of the Week.
USD hosted the Early Bird track and field meet over the weekend on April 4 and 5. Graduate student Lydia Knapp excelled in the hammer throw and discus throw on both days.
On the first day of the meet, Knapp threw the discus for a first place finish of 169’ 04” (51.62 m), which was 11 feet farther from the second place throw.
For the second day of the meet, Knapp claimed her second victory with a hammer throw of 201’ 3″ (61.34m).
The Linden, Iowa native has earned herself numerous awards throughout her career. Including Summit League indoor and outdoor individual championships, All-Summit indoor and outdoor gold medals and All-American Honorable Mention.
Not only has Knapp earned awards for her athletic performance, but also has earned All-Academic honors and Summit League Honor Roll. Knapp currently holds the women’s outdoor discus throw record with a throw of 175-2 set back in 2022.
