Political Science Department Hosts Annual Chili Cookoff

The Political Science Department is hosting its third annual chili cookoff fundraiser on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 5-7 p.m.at the Inman House.

This is one of the department’s most popular events throughout the year and is designed for students to meet others in the department and make new connections.

Faculty of the department bring chili and soup, and then attendees vote on their favorites. When Julia Hellwege, a political science professor, first came to USD, she didn’t realize that the chili cookoff was a competition. It made the event exciting for her once she discovered the competitive aspect of it.

“What I like most about the cookoff is that we all come together,” Hellwege said, “Spending time with faculty and students is something I care a lot about and why I wanted to teach at USD.”

The chili cookoff is a fundraiser for the Vermillion Food Pantry. Political science professor Sandy McKeown said how this decision was made when the department first created the event.

“Since many of the professors within the department were involved with the food pantry, it seemed like a logical fit for the proceeds,” McKeown said.

The event will be held at the Inman House, with admission being $5 or a comparable in-kind donation. All donations will go directly to Vermillion Food Pantry, Feeding Vermillion.
