Outdoors Club leadership in transition

While keeping its goal to create a connection for students who desire being outdoors, the Outdoors Club has sent out applications for new officer positions this week.

President Tanner Comp, vice president Muhammad Suria, treasurer Will Krause and office manager Brant DeKruif are resigning from their positions, but will still make an effort to mentor and guide the incoming officers during the transition period for the club.

“Holding that leadership position, this is something I want to see grow, and that’s why I’m stepping down as the president so someone else can step up to make sure the organization keeps growing,” said Comp, a junior and founder of the group.

While four officers are stepping back, current external communications manager Noah Rasmussen will stay in the group of about 180 members.

Rasmussen, a junior, joined in October and said this year has gone well for the group as a whole.

“The events have been filling up to full capacity,” he said. “Usually we have a problem of having too many people who want to come to the events.”

That success comes from the club’s main goal to eliminate the gap between student organizations, and only asking students to show up to the events planned by the executives, Comp said.

“We have a whole new take on what an organization should be,” he said. “The four (executives) are the ones who plan all of the events, which makes it so we can streamline our events. We don’t make people come to meetings — we put the burden on us to create the event, but then we put the burden on the members to go to the events and sign up early. That’s what a lot of people like.”

This year, the group has held two trapshooting sessions, a day at Great Bear Recreation Park in Sioux Falls and multiple hikes, giving everyone a chance to get outside and enjoy the outdoors, as well as a chance to get out of Vermillion every once in a while.

“I really enjoyed hiking, because I’m from an urban city,” Suria said. “It’s basically a concrete jungle, so being able to go out in nature with different people and enjoy and just experience it has been fun.”

The executives hope to continue planning cost-effective events for anyone who desires to attend, and they believe the group will continue to grow.

“It’s fun, and it’s outdoorsy,” Krause said. “There’s no other club like it.”
