USD announces former alum as new football coach

After saying no three times, former University of South Dakota student and football player Joe Glenn finally said yes and has been named USD’s new head football coach.

At the press conference announcing Glenn’s position Monday afternoon, Glenn said he didn’t pursue the open coaching position, but changed his mind in the end.

“I didn’t go after it until my heart got jump started,” Glenn said. “When I heard what (the university) was looking for, I slept on it for a night and then said, ‘Let’s get it on.

Glenn graduated from USD in 1971 and then received his master’s degree in education from the university in 1975. While playing for the Coyotes, Glenn led the team as quarterback and wide receiver.

His coaching career includes the University of Northern Colorado where he won back-to-back Division II National Championships, University of Montana where he won the 2001 Division I-AA National Championship, and the University of Wyoming where he helped the Cowboys win the Las Vegas Bowl in 2004, the team’s first bowl victory in 38 years.
