Sioux Falls Police Promise Crackdown On Noisy Vehicles

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sioux Falls police are promising a crackdown on loud vehicles this summer as part of a safe driving campaign that’s also targeting street racing and reckless driving.

Officer Jason Christensen tells the Argus Leader ( ) that the effort was spurred by growing complaints from residents.

Officials say seven motorcyclists were ticketed last year under Sioux Falls’ vehicle noise ordinance, which says vehicles can’t exceed 80 decibels. That’s roughly the equivalent of a garbage disposal.

City Councilor Kenny Anderson Jr. has been in talks with motorcyclists in the community to address some of their concerns. He says the ordinance might need amending.

He says a new Harley-Davidson straight from the factory can come out about three decibels higher than what the city ordinance allows.
