SD Man Who Pointed Rifle At Police Officer Gets 8 Years

ELK POINT, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota man who was shot in the arm after he pointed a rifle at a police officer has been ordered to spend 8 years in prison.

The Argus Leader ( ) reports the sentence against 21-year-old Christopher Heuer came Monday in Union County. Heuer was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with 22 of those suspended.

An investigation into the Jan. 15 shooting concluded that Heuer, of Sioux Falls, was suicidal and was shot when he pointed a rifle at Beresford Police Sgt. Dave Steckelberg after being told to put the weapon down.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation handled the probe, which found that Steckelberg’s actions were justified.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were found on Heuer’s system.

Heuer’s attorney couldn’t immediately be reached to comment on the sentence.
