Central South Dakota Bus Driver Wins National Honor

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The driving skills of a central South Dakota bus driver have been recognized at a national competition.

The Capital Journal reports driver Adam Sharkey with the River Cities Public Transit earned fourth place at the annual National Community Transportation Roadeo. Sharkey competed against nearly 90 drivers from the U.S. and Canada.

The drivers were judged in four categories: driving skills, written test, inspecting the vehicle and securing wheelchairs. Out of a possible 1,000 points, Sharkey scored 811. The highest score was 858.

This was Sharkey’s second time participating in the event. He said this time he focused on replicating what he does at work every day, and in turn, that “calmed” him down and made the challenge “a lot easier.”

Sharkey has been a bus driver for three years.
