Cost Of Proposed $8M Library In Aberdeen Drawing Scrutiny

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Some in Aberdeen are questioning the cost of a proposed $8 million public library.

The American News reports ( ) that the project cost has increased from an initial estimate of $6.9 million. The Alexander Mitchell Public Library Foundation is working to raise $2.1 million, meaning taxpayers would be responsible for $5.9 million of the cost.

Resident Duane Riedel says he supports a new library but wonders if it needs to cost $8 million. City Councilman Todd Campbell says he’s also worried about the cost, and about the fact that foundation fundraising won’t be complete when construction starts.

Architect Tom Hurlbert says there are several possible ways to reduce the cost, including making the parking lot asphalt rather than concrete.
