Barthel recently announced he’s stepping down in October, after more than 12 years at the helm of the police department and almost 30 years on the force. Burns will succeed him if his appointment is approved by the City Council.
Barthel says he “couldn’t be more impressed” with the work Burns has done since being promoted to assistant chief in February.
Burns says he will work to keep communication open between the department and the public.
The 52-year-old Barthel is taking a position as director of community relations and public policy for Sanford’s health care system.
