Coyotes win Pacific Community Classic, extend winning streak to nine
Less than a month of play has passed for USD’s volleyball team, but they’re already on a nine-game winning streak.
The Coyote volleyball team took a trip to the Pacific Community Classic in Stockton, California. They took on Northern Colorado, Oregon State and Pacific.

USD won three matches in two days to increase their winning streak to nine in the season.
Knowing that Northern Colorado was going to be a tough team to beat, USD made sure to go to the game with a little extra fire.
“We won against Northern Colorado in three,” head coach Leanne Williamson said, “I think that was a good start to the tournament. They are a very good team.”
The Coyotes fought for a 25-23 win in the first set. They then cruised to a 25-12 win in the second set, before finishing off the Bears 25-19 in the third and final set.
“That was a really good confidence booster for us, just to play against that caliber of a team and come out with a win,” Williamson said.
USD then faced Oregon State. The Coyotes dropped the first set 20-25, but would win the following three at 25-18, 25-19 and 28-26 respectively.
However, the true icing on the cake for USD was beating Pacific on their own home turf. The Coyotes secured the victory in four close sets. They won the first 25-22, lost the second 18-25 and won the final two at 26-24 and 25-23 respectively.
“To beat a team on their home floor is great and to beat a very good home team on their own floor is even better,” Williamson said.
The tournament win is just another notch on the volleyball team’s belt. They haven’t lost since losing 1-3 to Alabama in the first match of the year.
“We are going to keep competing at a high level. We have another big tournament coming up this weekend,” Williamson said. “We want to come out with the satisfaction of playing our best volleyball.”
In preparation for their upcoming matches, the girls use their motto of going 1-0. They take it one day and one team at a time. The recent success of the Coyotes can be attributed to the talent and athleticism of the players, but junior Rachel Schmidt says it also comes from the camaraderie.
“We just have such great team chemistry this year,” Schmidt said. “It is so great to be on the court with everyone. This is our year and we can all feel that.”
Schmidt isn’t the only player that is feeling the solidarity of the team. Fellow teammate and senior Audrey Reeg also said the team is really coming together.
“The highlight for me is playing with my teammates. There is a different kind of energy when we really play together,” Reeg said. “We play closer and our screams are louder for our success together.”
Reeg was named MVP of the Pacific Community Classic. Reeg had a total of 44 kills, 32 digs and 125 total attempts during the tournament. Even though Reeg received this merit, she wanted to pass the credit on to her team.
“I have 13 other girls behind me, and we can’t have the successes we have without them,” Reeg said.
