Q&A: Sprinter makes funny to help him run
Sophomore Matt Kerswill is a sprinter on the USD track team. Kerswill claimed three All-Great West honors last season. He finished third in the 60 meters at the GWC Indoor Championships, finished second in the 100 meters at the GWC Outdoor Championships with a season-best 10.67 and also ran on USD’s winning 4×100-meter relay team.
Emma Murray: Do the funny faces sprinters make while running help them run faster?
Matt Kerswill: I don’t know. It’s a little bit of
everything. It’s emotion. It looks like pain in a lot of faces, but I make faces too so I don’t know. My eyes open up really wide.
EM: If the #2 pencil is the most
popular, why’s it still #2?
MK: Because they haven’t come up with the #1 pencil.
EM: If a word is
misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?
MK: We wouldn’t know.
EM: Who would be your dream date? Where would you take her?
MK: Jennifer Lopez — she’s sexy. (I’d take her) somewhere expensive. She could pay for it.
EM: If you were Richard Simmons for a day, what would you do and why?
MK: I’d just make fun of people I guess, because I could.
EM: If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?
MK: Because guys like it.
EM: If four out of five people suffer from diarrhea, does that mean the fifth one enjoys it?
MK: I’d say yes. They enjoy it.
EM: Charlie Sheen
question…Are you a
warlock or a troll?
MK: I’d be a troll. He’s a weird dude.
EM: If you could have your own TV series, what would it be called and what would it be about?
MK: “Real Life in South Dakota” and it’d be South Dakota wildlife and
everything else in South Dakota.
EM: Do you enjoy putting hours upon hours of work in to run such short races?
MK: Yeah. It’s weird. We practice every day and then you run for twenty seconds. Sometimes it’s like, ‘Why’d I practice that much?’ It does pay off in the end.
EM: Why is the word “abbreviate” so long?
MK: I don’t know.
EM: If a sign says no shirt, no shoes, no service… do you have to wear pants?
MK: I’d say no. The sign doesn’t say you have to wear pants.
EM: If you could choose one word that best describes yourself, what would it be and why?
MK: Funny, because I like to make jokes with people and I like to make them laugh.
EM: Burger King or McDonald’s? Why?
MK: Definitely
McDonald’s because of their breakfast burritos.
