Literary Project hosts poetry slam
The University of South Dakota’s Department of English will be hosting the Vermillion Literary Project’s first poetry slam of the semester in the Muenster University Center Pit Lounge Jan. 31.
The poetry slam—a competitive poetry performance–begins at 7 p.m. and will feature author and USD professor Fred Arroyo as a special guest.
Dr. Arroyo teaches creative writing and contemporary fiction, and has authored books such as The Region of Lost Names and Western Avenue. Dr. Arroyo will be doing a reading at the event, which will be followed by the poetry slam.
The VLP is comprised of students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and its poetry slams, readings and writing contests are open to the public. The group also publishes an independent literary and visual arts magazine once a year.
Students interested in competing in the poetry slam should bring three original poems to the event. Winners will be awarded prizes, courtesy of the VLP.
