BLOG: How harmful is your food?

In my younger years, I ate foods indiscriminately. Whatever was tasty and enjoyable I consumed. I had little thought or care about what was in the products and the foods I was eating. There was no reason to care too much, since I had more important activities in my life to attend to.

As I began to be exposed to articles discussing health and nutrition, I was astounded at the amount of harmful ingredients I had been eating. Chemicals, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, preservatives and others are laden in our food.

The consequence of all this has been increased obesity, diabetes, cancers, heart disease and a general feeling of not being in ones top physical and mental condition.

When people say we become what we eat, they tell the truth.

Food is becoming less nutritionally dense, meaning it no longer has the same properties it once had. This is because of deficient soils, cooking, preservation and not allowing foods to grow to full capacity. Have you ever bought fruits and veggies that weren’t fully ripe or mature? Companies can make more profit by picking products early.

In the past, food would decay and rot, but today we stuff the food with chemical additives to preserve it. While the product may superficially appear “normal,” the fact is that it is not. Highly processed foods are depleted of their natural qualities.

Harm is literally being done to our bodies and minds by eating this food that stocks the shelves at grocery stores or our university. Our bodies cannot properly digest what is contained in these products. Try reading the ingredients on the labels and you will find yourself unable. Many of these compounds are made in a lab and help influence shelf-life, coloration and taste. Most, if not all, are terrible for us, yet somehow we put up with it so we can have what we believe to be a “perfect” looking and tasting item.

Health costs are soaring and the economy is reeling under the weight of an unhealthy population. What can be more basic; what can be saner than to take care of one’s self? I imagine we want quality things in our life, but why do we not demand the same standards for our food?

Walk down the aisles of Walmart or Hy-Vee and you will find the cheapest, most unhealthy food displayed most visibly; it is the same here at school, too.

I’m sure you can visualize a stack of calorie-packed soda that contains high fructose corn syrup, which is very bad for us, although very cheap.

Ironically, the poorer you are the more likely you are to be overweight. It was just the opposite a couple hundred years ago. Now, the most calorie-packed,unhealthy foods are the cheapest mainly because the government subsidizes them.

I ask this with a true curiosity: Why do harm to your body? Body and mind are inseparable. An unhealthy body equates to an unhealthy mind. An unhealthy mind and body means less happiness and less intelligence.

Your quality of life is greatly reduced because you do not feel at your best. Since we’ve been eating this way for many years, perhaps your whole life, we’ve forgotten or never experienced what it feels like to be healthy.

It is logical to start purchasing different products and demanding they be available. What can be more intimate than putting something in your body? We’ve desacralized eating food in this society so we do not know what to eat except what is thrown at us by corporations.

It is worth your time to look into what you should be eating. Your quality of life is at stake. Eating tasty foods that are unhealthy is a paltry experience compared to the energy and the feeling of being human that one is aware of while eating healthy, as a normal individual should.
