Students volunteer in Vermillion, Yankton for Day of Service
More than 80 University of South Dakota students participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Jan. 19.
For the seventh year in a row, the Center for Academic and Global Engagement at USD organized and sponsored various volunteer efforts in both Vermillion and Yankton. In total, students volunteered at 16 different locations including the Vermillion Public Library, the Newman Center and the Heartland Humane Society.
Each year, thousands of people across the U.S. volunteer in their communities on Jan. 19 to remember the civil rights activist.
Chris Stockdale, assistant director for academic engagement, said the day’s activities allowed students to feel like they were a part of something bigger than themselves and to volunteer for the common good.
“The whole point is to see that a lot of this stuff is bigger than you, it’s bigger than me, it’s bigger than us and when you’re involved in a movement that’s nationwide then I think you feel that even more,” Stockdale said.
