Anti-Common Core Plan Fails To Get Full House Consideration

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota House of Representatives has voted to not consider a measure that would end the state’s involvement in the Common Core educational standards.

The House voted 39-31 on Tuesday as part of procedural maneuvering not to schedule the bill to be on the calendar for Wednesday’s floor session.

Aberdeen Republican Rep. Dan Kaiser argues the anti-Common Core measure should have been heard on the floor. He says advocates of the standards have been allowed to “propagandize” during committee.

Kaiser says it’s time to make sure opponents receive a fair hearing to discuss the standards.

Republican Rep. Jacqueline Sly of Rapid City says her committee gave adequate consideration to the bill.

The proposal narrowly died in committee last week, and procedural maneuvers ultimately failed to resurrect it.
