Freshman US Sen. Mike Rounds Ends 2014 With $136,000 In Debt

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The high-profile campaign of freshman U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds has ended 2014 with about $80,000 in the bank and $136,000 in debt.

Recently released 2014 year-end campaign finance reports show Rounds ultimately raised nearly $5.2 million through the end of 2014 and spent just over $5 million.

Rob Skjonsberg, campaign manager for Rounds, was not available to comment Friday.

The former South Dakota governor’s bumpy path to the U.S. Senate in 2014 at times appeared competitive, but he triumphed on Election Day by roughly 20 points in a four-way race with Democrat Rick Weiland and independents Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie.

Rounds won’t face re-election until 2020 and joined U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem and U.S. Sen. John Thune as the third Republican in the South Dakota congressional delegation.
