Man Confronted Gunman In SD Shooting, Tried To Grab Gun

MARION, S.D. (AP) — The man who authorities are crediting for preventing more injuries during a shooting at an industrial site in Lennox says he did all he could to take the weapon away from the gunman.

The 45-year-old Brian Roesler tells the Argus Leader ( ) that he stood up from his cubicle when he heard two noises that sounded like explosions and wrestled with the shooter who authorities have identified as 51-year-old Jeffrey DeZeeuw (dee-zee-OO’), of Sioux Falls.

Authorities say DeZeeuw argued with 45-year-old Jon Richter Thursday morning and later returned, killing Richter and wounding 46-year-old Kathy Steever.

Roesler says he took a blow to the head in the scuffle. But Lennox Police Chief Orville Jorgensen says Roesler’s actions “very possibly” prevented others from getting injured.

Authorities say DeZeeuw shot and killed himself after the shooting.
