Bicameral Group In SD Passes College Scholarship Increases

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A bicameral group of South Dakota legislators has voted to increase the per-student amount of funding available to incoming college students eligible for the Opportunity Scholarship.

Legislators voted to amend the bill Thursday to allow incoming South Dakota students to receive up to $1,300 for their first three years of college and up to $2,600 for their fourth year. Current students would not see increases.

The increase for current students had to be removed after state economists predicted that revenue collections next budget year will fall short of previous projections.

South Dakota students have to meet certain academic requirements and attend an in-state post-secondary institution to be eligible for the scholarship.

The incoming 2015 class of South Dakota college students would be the first group to see the increases.
