Former Rapid City Police Chief Running Against Mayor

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The former police chief in Rapid City is taking on the mayor.

Former Chief Steve Allender says he’s decided to run against Mayor Sam Kooiker (KWAY’-kuhr), who is seeking his third term in the June 2 election.

Allender retired about 10 months ago, ending a 30-year career with the police department. He says there’s “something uniquely rewarding in public service.”

City Councilwoman Amanda Scott also has announced a mayoral run.
