Homicide, Negligent Manslaughter Up In South Dakota In 2014

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Arrests for homicides and negligent manslaughter, sex offenses and assaults all increased in South Dakota last year.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says the annual crime report shows a 69 percent increase in homicides and negligent manslaughter over the year, a 2 percent rise in sex offenses and a 1.85 percent jump in assaults. The figures come from the state’s annual crime report that was released Thursday.

The report shows that the total number of criminal offenses rose 1 percent from 2013, to more than 65,000.

Jackley says the 1 percent increase in offenses reflects that “overall, South Dakota remains a safe place to live.”

The report also shows a drop in drug and alcohol offenses as well as arrests of juvenile offenders.
