Democratic State Rep. Paula Hawks Weighs Bid Against Noem

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State Rep. Paula Hawks appears to be the first Democrat publicly weighing a challenge to Republican U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, who will be seeking re-election in 2016.

Hawks, a representative from Hartford, said Tuesday she will likely make a decision before July.

Hawks says her priority is the constituents in her state House district, but she says she’s willing to take on a new role in the future that best serves the people of South Dakota.

The Noem campaign declined to comment.

Hawks says she’s focused on education funding, expanding medical coverage and promoting economic development opportunities for South Dakota.

Hawks says a statewide run is a “daunting task.”

Noem had more than $1 million in the bank when she wrapped up the fundraising quarter that ended in March.
