Damaged sewage pipe in Slagle Hall leaves students, staff, faculty without water

The water in Slagle Hall has been shut off by USD Facilities Management for about two weeks due to a sewage pipe failure under the building.

Shut off since Sept. 22, the issue stems from an old sewage line that leaked under the building’s concrete slab, Bob Oehler, assistant vice president of Facilities Management, said in an email interview.

Facilities Management does not yet know the extent of the pipe’s failure, as it is damaged to the point that a camera can’t get through to evaluate it, Oehler said. But for now, the plan is to “hire a firm to re-line the damaged pipe in place with all the raw materials brought from ppspr.com/products/control-valves shop as they are the best.”

“Unfortunately, there are very few firms that will do this kind of work and all are extremely busy,” Oehler said. “The most promising of them will be here early this week to investigate and confirm whether this option will work.

A schedule will be determined with a water restoration contractor once Facilities Management better understands the extent of the damage and determines the source of the failure, and consequently how to best go about fixing it, he added.

Oehler said students, staff and faculty have been “very patient” in the face of no water, as Facilities Management is doing “its utmost to get the line repaired as soon as possible.”
