Planned Parenthood should continue to be funded

There has been a lot of tension in Congress lately over attempts to defund Planned Parenthood.

These attempts stem from concerns about Planned Parenthood’s fetal-tissue harvesting operations. Leaked footage shows Planned Parenthood employees discussing fetal tissue sales and other illegal activities.

These accusations of wrongdoings have led to investigations of Planned Parenthoods throughout the country. No investigation has found any wrongdoing concerning the illegal sale of fetal tissue, leading to the belief the videos are edited to the liking of pro-life organizations.

The congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood is officially titled “Planned Parenthood Exposed: Examining the Horrific Abortion Practices at the Nation’s Largest Abortion Provider.” As one can see from the biased title, the investigation of Planned Parenthood is hardly a beacon of fair and balanced politics.

Put simply, Planned Parenthood needs to exist and should not be defunded.

Abortion services are already not funded by tax payer money.

Some people believe tax payer money should not be used to support Planned Parenthood, regardless of if the videos were edited. They believe tax dollars should not be spent on supposedly “immoral” practices.

However, the United States spends billions of dollars supporting private corporations who also perform actions that could be considered immoral.

The worldwide “race to the bottom” is fueled by private companies and the vast wealth gap in the United States is fueled by corporate abuse. Morality is more than opposing abortions, morality includes standing up to moral indiscretions even if they lie outside your party lines.

Even though Planned Parenthood is known mostly for its abortion services, it provides many more services that benefit women’s health. In fact, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortion related, according to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood is the number one provider of sex-education in the United States. Planned Parenthood’s aim is not to cause abortions – in fact most of the work they do ensures that abortions will only be used as a last resort. By providing sex education and contraceptives, Planned Parenthood is doing what they can to prevent anybody from being in the position where they even have to consider getting an abortion.

By defunding Planned Parenthood, Congress would only be putting people at risk. Without proper sex education and contraceptive availability, unwanted pregnancies will become more prevalent.

Planned Parenthood is not the only way to get an abortion, but it is best way to get a safe abortion. For example, without Planned Parenthood a desperate, pregnant woman may turn to an in-home abortion, putting her at greater risk for harm.

Planned Parenthood has been proven innocent despite one-sided efforts to prove them guilty. Even if they were guilty, tax dollars don’t pay for abortions. The United States is a developed country and there is no room in a developed country for people to not receive adequate healthcare.

It is a moral duty to support those who are in need, and by defunding Planned Parenthood the American people fail to meet this moral duty.
