School Of Mines Getting Federal Mine-safety Funding Grant

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota School of Mines at Technology is getting a share of $8.4 million in federal grant funding to reduce mining accidents and injuries and for training programs.

The grants from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration are aimed at providing miners with federally mandated training.

The school in Rapid City is in line for $69,000 in funding.

The agency says the grants cover training and retraining of miners working at surface and underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines, including miners engaged in shell dredging or employed at surface stone, sand and gravel mining operations.

The funding announced this week is headed to 47 states and the Navajo Nation. States first received funding to provide this kind of training in 1971.
