USD thaws losing streak in Frost Arena, beats SDSU 63-58
The Coyote women thawed their losing streak in Frost Arena Sunday afternoon and won their first game there since 1990, beating the Jackrabbits in a close 63-58 game.
With less than a minute left to play, senior guard Nicole Seekamp tied up the game 58-58 before hitting her first three of the game, putting the Coyotes up 61-58 with 13.7 seconds to play. After a SDSU missed three, USD center Margaret McCloud rebounded the ball to Seekamp who was fouled. Seekamp hit both free throws, sealing SDSU’s fate with less than two seconds left on the clock.
Sunday’s game was the 71st meeting between the Coyotes and the Jackrabbits with SDSU leading the series 46-25. The game saw multiple lead changes at the end with SDSU leading the Coyotes through the third. The largest lead the Jackrabbits were able to maintain was by nine at the 9:31 mark in the third. The Coyotes’ largest lead in contrast was by five at the end of the second.
USD was led in scoring by senior guard Nicole Seekamp with 23 points followed by senior guards Kelly Stewart and Tia Hemiller with 13 points and seven points respectively. Sunday’s win was also USD head coach Amy William’s 77th Coyote win, making her the third-winningest coach in USD program history
The Coyotes improve to 13-5 on the season and will take on Fort Wayne Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
