Coyote softball looks to Summit League play

Coyote softball will soon be starting conference play, an intense time for all teams in the Summit League. USD’s first game will be played against Fort Wayne, a team ranked lower than the Coyotes in pre-conference polls.

The conference season will go until the beginning of May, with games being played between March 25 and May 7.

Through the pre-conference Spring season, the women were challenged, but put up a good fight.

“We were definitely challenged with the teams we have played so far this season, but that has only prepared us for when the regular season begins and games really start to matter,” said junior Shelby Keil.

Throughout the pre-season games, the women stayed strong when they came up against tough teams.

“A strength of our team is being able to stay together and still be a team when we aren’t doing the greatest. We don’t go our separate ways when things get hard, we always stick together,” said freshman Morgan Vasa. “Weaknesses we deal with are starting out slow in some games, also not being able to get the pressure off our shoulders is an issue we deal with.”

Keil said each women’s softball coach has an area of expertise when it comes to the game.

“All of our coaches provide insight wherever it is needed, no matter the position,” Keil said.

“However, head coach Amy Kylse focuses mainly on pitching and defense, assistant coach Hallie Blackney focuses mainly on hitting and graduate assistant Allie Daly helps the catchers a lot.”

Klyse entered the 2016 season with the best winning percentage in program history and four wins short of 200 wins.

“Our team’s greatest strength is definitely our defense,” Keil said. “We are consistently making plays for our pitchers.”
