Community, students mourn Colette Abbott at memorial service

Hundreds of people filled Aalfs Auditorium Monday morning to mourn the death of USD First Lady Colette Abbott.

Abbott, the wife of President James Abbott, was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago and was awaiting surgery when she died at her home on May 4. She was 59.

Among those in attendance were South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard and his wife Linda Daugaard, and Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels and his wife Karen Michels.

During the memorial service, Sara Abbott Agne, Colette and James’ daughter, spoke about her mother’s love for life and sense of adventure.

“She was truly inspiring and we were honored to be her super fans,” she said.
