Possible cyberattack on Volante website leads to beefed up security

On Sunday morning four stories on The Volante’s website were unpublished in the matter of minutes, alerting editors to a possible cyber breach.

The stories, which were all Verve articles, were unpublished from an editor’s account, whose password has since been changed.

In a 24-hour period, there were 240 failed login attempts on The Volante’s administrator accounts from various IP addresses located in Russia, Ukraine and France. In total, there have been 640 failed login attempts on the website in the last week and more than 1,800 since the start of the semester.

Hackers this year have targeted news organizations across the country, including the New York Times, although attacks against college newspapers are practically unheard of.

A new security feature was added to The Volante’s website and both editors and reporters are in the process of changing their passwords. The stories that were unpublished from the website were republished.
