USD women’s tennis goes 1-1 over the weekend

The USD women’s tennis team had a busy weekend on the road playing at Sioux Falls on Friday and at Drake Saturday.

The weekend started on a hot note for Coyotes; they defeated the Cougars 7-0 in Sioux Falls at Huether Family Match Pointe Friday morning.

USD had a strong start to the dual and defeated Sioux Falls in all three doubles matches. The Coyotes carried the momentum into the singles matches, where they won all six contests. USD bounced back strong following their season-opening loss at Iowa State. The Coyotes only dropped four total games among the doubles matches, and 11 games among the singles matches.

Against the Cougars, Senior Jana Lazarevic, and teammate Anna Marija Bukina posted a 6-3 win for the No. 1 doubles match. Lazarevic also earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in her singles match over Megan Quandt, while Bukina won her singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Joelie Thorfinson.

Senior Habiba Aly and Natka Kmoskova were victorious 6-1 in their No. 2 doubles match. Aly also secured a singles victory 6-1, 6-2 over Talia Jones while Kmoskova defeated Lexi Miller 6-1, 6-0.

Yulia Almiron Solano and Berta Girbau earned a 6-0 shutout victory in the No. 3 doubles match. Almiron Solano also defeated Danielle Thorfinson 6-1, 6-0 in her singles match, while Girbau posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rachel Klatt.

On Saturday morning, the Coyotes effort fell short in their dual against the Drake Bulldogs 4-3 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Drake defeated USD in all three doubles matches and picked up the crucial doubles point in the contest. The Coyotes and Bulldogs split the singles matches 3-3. USD had a match point and a chance to win the match, but Drake ultimately held on to get their first win of the season.

USD’s Aly cruised to a straight-set singles victory 7-6, 6-1 over Maria Tatarnikova, and Girbau defeated Drake’s Kendall Hunt in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Lazarevic grinded out a tough three-set victory over Liza Petushkova (6-2, 6-7, 6-4), while Bukina fell just short in a three-set match to the Bulldogs Darinka Stephan (5-7, 6-2, 6-7).

The Coyotes record sits at 1-2 following this weekend’s matches. USD will continue their road swing next week when they travel to face DePaul (2-1) on Friday, Feb. 12, and Marquette (2-1) on Sunday, Feb. 14.
