Games, Prizes and More at the 34th Annual Vermincon

This past weekend (Jan. 23-25) saw the 34th annual Vermincon take place in the MUC Ballroom, where it garnered scores of board games, vendors, events and fans alike. Presented by the USD Games Club, Vermincon is a yearly convention that aims to be a community gathering for board game lovers, fandoms and those wanting to learn more about both.

Attendees had access to      countless varied board games, as well as vendors and artists selling merchandise ranging from board games, art prints, and various fandom paraphernalia. Each day of the event held numerous long and short games run by community members who welcomed newcomers by teaching them how to play. The convention concluded Sunday evening with celebrations and a promise that the convention would return next January.

Beginning in 1991, Vermincon has been running each year, barring 2020, with recent years seeing attendance reach around 200 people, and numerous vendors and artists in the area participating. Notable participating artists included Paul Niemyer, who created art for the original Mortal Kombat arcade games, and Fred Gorham, who has worked in the comics industry for over 25 years.

A raffle was also held, where many high-value prizes were gifted by numerous contributors, including the USD E-sports team. Money raised by this raffle went directly to the Michael Rohan Memorial Fund, which aims to fund children in need of swimming lessons. In their efforts, the convention was able to raise $701 for this charity.

During the busiest moments of the weekend, the MUC Ballroom was buzzing with activity from the countless different games being played, to the people who cosplayed for the event. According to President of Games Club, Oliver Ryberg, the convention is able to run every year thanks to consistent alumni support and the passion expressed by club members and attendees alike. The organizers already have plans in the works to schedule a time for next year’s convention.
