Greek Life Kicks Off Spring Recruitment

With heading into a new semester, students not only have a fresh start academically, but also a fresh start for new opportunities.

USD’s Greek life, consisting of four sororities and seven fraternities, has begun their recruitment process for the spring semester. With a more informal setting than fall rush, students still get the chance to visit the houses and attend the activities, such as cookouts, yard games, and much more, that each chapter puts on.

“All of the fraternities on campus show shared values such as academics, leadership, philanthropy and personal responsibility, and they offer the resources that help members grow and contribute positively to the campus community,” Hunter Post, Interfraternity Council President, said.

The IFC works to provide resources and guidance to the USD fraternities, as well as ensuring recruitment is a safe and welcoming environment. The council also assists chapters in planning events and helping potential recruits to get to know the brothers and each chapter’s values.

Post, who has served previously as Phi Delta Theta’s treasurer and president, said the previous experience in leadership has helped support his work at the IFC level, since he understands chapter operations and leadership from the inside.

Looking at the sorority side of spring recruitment, the Panhellenic Council at USD guides women to find their new potential home in Greek life.

For spring rush, sororities do not require new members to visit each house, unlike in the fall. Instead, the chapters put on more relaxed events, such as painting nights, for girls to come meet other chapter members. New recruits have the option to pick and choose which house they want to visit.

“Each chapter has something special to offer,” Abby Moore, Panhellenic Council President, said. “They’re not all the same, but they are all filled with amazing girls.”

In addition to the IFC and Panhellenic Council, the Sorority & Fraternity Life Office assists Greek houses in recruitment processes.

“The Sorority & Fraternity Life Office supports chapters in any way the chapters need, whether it is onboarding new members, communicating university policy, or assisting with recruitment efforts. A primary focus of the office is to help with promotion and to onboard new members into university systems,” Devin Johansen, Sorority and Fraternity Life Advisor said.
