New Ceramics Club: An Artistic Way to De-stress

In an age when everything is digital, and even leisure time is spent watching shows or scrolling through a phone, a hands-on hobby is a must. Fortunately for students and everyone in the community, SodaC, the new ceramics club, has opened its doors for anyone who wants to dive into a world of creativity.

“I really enjoy seeing people just have fun. And I think because the medium is just endlessly recyclable, it’s a very low-stakes way to experiment with art,” Ruby Gray, a sophomore majoring in Ceramics and the president of the club, said.

SodaC started as a fun idea between Gray and Assistant Professor of Ceramics in the Art Department, Jinsik Yoo, who later became the club’s advisor. The mission of SodaC is to give students the opportunity to explore ceramics and provide an alternative to the three-hour course offered by the university.

Members of the club are not expected to have any experience, since Gray is there to teach them how to throw or use the wheel. In addition, members can make anything they desire at no cost.

When asked about their plans for the club’s future, Gray mentioned organizing more programs and completing SodaC’s constitution so they could be recognized as a club by the university and the Student Government Association.

As explained by Gray, many factors influence how long it takes to reach the finished product, but the wait is worth it. For people interested in joining, the club meets every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in room 170 of the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts.
