Could I Survive Without the Internet?
Obviously, the internet is not essential for life. We do not need it like we need food, water or shelter, but it would be a difficult change for people to stop using the internet.
I can hardly imagine how bored I would become. When USD’s internet went out on Wednesday, I spent two hours doing absolutely nothing. Thankfully I didn’t have class, but I shudder at the thought of having to be in class without taking notes on my computer or playing Tetris when I get bored.
If the internet suddenly stopped for the rest of time there would be so many things I find uncomfortable that I would have to do. We would have to go shopping in person. All of the random things I order from Amazon would have to be found elsewhere, in an actual store. Imagine needing a new pot for your plants and you have a specific idea of what you want. Looking online I can easily find a zombie pig flower pot. But trying to find that in a store would be a lot more work and time.
No internet also means no Google Maps. I can’t find my way out of a paper bag and expecting me to either know where I’m going or read a map is unrealistic and cruel. There is also the possibility of having to ask random people how to get somewhere, absolutely horrifying.
If there is no internet where do I find all the answers to my pointless questions? Who honestly knows when George Washington was born or what a group of bats is called?
With no internet I can not self-diagnose myself with an incurable disease every time I sneeze.
Some people might argue the internet has caused lots of problems and disconnect between people. I won’t argue with that, but I certainly would not like to be without it. I need my daily dose of cat and dog pictures from Instagram and to check my email every morning when I wake up.
The internet has greatly benefited us. We use it daily for work, school, general information, news, social media and so much more. The internet has become a vital part of our day to day lives.
