Coyotes Take Runner-Up in Summit League Swim & Dive Championships

The University of South Dakota swim and dive teams placed second in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the Summit League Championships in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend. 

The teams set school records, won multiple events and had several All-Summit League performances over the four-day competition on the University of Iowa campus.

The opening night of the championships included two school records for the women’s team. The 200 medley relay team of Grace Schultz, Taylor Buhr, Sara Mayer, and Emily Kahn finished with a time of 1:40.42. 

The 800 free relay team of Emily DiProspero, Tatum O’Shea, Skyler Leverenz, and Carson White posted a time of 7:22.34. Both relays placed second. The men’s 200 medley relay team placed second, while the 800 free relay team finished third. Alex Parkinson swam a 1:40.03 opening split in the 800 free relay, moving into the USD all-time top ten​.

The women’s 200 free relay team won a Summit League title with a time of 1:31.43. The team of Kahn, Christina Spomer, Mayer, and White secured the program’s third consecutive league championship in the event. Kahn placed second in the 50 free with a time of 22.84.

DiProspero placed second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:52.17, moving to second in school history​. The men’s 200 free relay team of Rounds, Sorbe, Carlson, and Schreiber placed third, earning All-Summit League honors​.

Kahn won the 100 free for the third consecutive year, setting a school record with a time of 49.39. She then swam the opening leg of the 400 free relay, leading the team to a Summit League title. The team of Kahn, Schultz, Gehrke, and White posted a time of 3:19.28. Kahn finished her career at USD with 11 Summit League gold medals.

DiProspero scored 50.5 points in individual events and was named Summit League Newcomer of the Championships, the first Coyote to receive this award. She placed second in the 1650 free with a school-record time of 16:59.38. Schultz finished second in the 200 backstroke and Buhr finished third in the 200 breaststroke​.

For the men, Contreras-Fallico won the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.92 and placed third in the 200 backstroke. Parkinson set a school record in the 1650 free with a time of 15:31.23, finishing fourth. Berdahl finished second in the 100 breaststroke. Rounds placed second in the 100 backstroke. Wolner placed third in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke​.

South Dakota finished second in the team standings. The women scored 712 points, marking their fourth consecutive runner-up finish and sixth in the past seven seasons. The men scored 697.5 points, placing second for the fifth time in the last eight years​.
