South American duo to visit classroom
This week, the sounds of South America are coming to the University of South Dakota.
Sept. 22 at 11 a.m., guitarist Allen Mathews and percussionist John Pennington will be performing for the music department’s Recital Laboratory course. The recital, which is free and open to students and the public, will be held in the Colton Recital Hall in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts.
The recital will last for around 50 minutes and will showcase South American music for guitar and percussion.
Mathews, who lives in Portland, Ore., and teaches guitar studies as well as private guitar lessons at Reed College as well as private guitar lessons, said his time in South America provided inspiration for the music that will be played on Thursday.
“I spent around six months in Brazil and specialized in music there,” Mathews said. “Students can expect to hear some ‘Choro’ and some ‘Samba’ music. A lot of this music is older solo guitar or solo guitar and percussion music of the 20th be.”
