REVIEW: Little Big Town goes on wild ride
In their newest record, “Tornado,” four-person tag team Little Big Town creates a beautiful country album. They creatively blend small town gospel with deep, rich resounding tones that stick with the listener long after they take off their headphones.
Going back and forth between slower, heartfelt songs and upbeat, fun foot-stomping tracks that engage the listener and creates a great continuation of the band’s career. The songs are relatable and bring a sense of small town ways and relaxing summers to mind. They speak of slow times, heartfelt home values, insecurity and power. It channels so much feeling into one album that it creates a magical journey through the every moment of each song.
Their title song bears a slight resemblance to Carrie Underwood’s recent release “Blown Away”, but still holds its own with an altered message and different sound. The beautiful gospel feel they achieve in “Can’t Go Back” surprises, as it is not what might normally be associated with Little Big Town. Regardless, it is still a wonderful addition to this collection of diverse sounding songs.
With the ever-present guitar in the background of the album, one never forgets who they are listening to. The band’s country tone rings true in every word and chord of this album. This is truly a country album from singers who understand what country music means and communicate it well with this album.
One thing that this album seems void of are songs that fly at midrange, meaning the type of song that aren’t fast enough to get you moving and yet not something you can slow dance to. But the lack of those midrange songs adds to the appeal of the album because there isn’t a dull moment to be found in “Tornado.” It does justice to this group’s diverse sound and leaves the listener waiting for more from this amazing quartet.
