Young, Wild & Greek: The sorority girl squat
The meaning behind the sorority girl squat. What you’ve all mocked and ridiculed at one point or another – defined. Urban dictionary says – “The pose that all sorority girls, everywhere, at every college, immediately get into when taking a group picture. It consists of a hands-on-knees squat of varying heights, usually with a few short girls sitting in the front. This creates an easy, organized, tiered pose (because, God forbid anyone be covered in the picture).”
They’re right!
When a group of girls get together naturally there will be picture taking sesh where the flash goes off continuously and your cheeks begin to burn. A couple smaller pictures, a funny picture, a fake laughing picture, and then a sorority “squat” picture. This final picture is the most important. All the girls squeeze into a tiny amount of space and squat.
It baffles me why every girl squats, but we do. It’s natural. The cheesing begins and the photo is taken. It’s one of our many poses. Every house has their symbol they form with themselves somehow. May it be arrows, the Xi, the kite, or the ivy leaf it is a sign that nationally represents the sorority.
Then there is the “girl with sass” pose. This is when you throw your hand on your hip, fling you hair back and smile. Or the “touchy face” picture when you squeeze your faces together. Then there are you classic duck faces, sticking the tongue out, winking, fake laughing, cheek kissing, and a plethora of others.
Why sorority girls take these photos? Well the world may never know.
But hey, it’s a great life to be young, wild, and Greek!
