Coyotes drop below, even vs. Iowa

The University of South Dakota shot just 34 percent from the field on their way to a 67-85 loss to the University of Iowa on Tuesday night.

During the majority of the first half, the Coyotes were able to slow down Iowa’s up-tempo offensive attack.

After falling behind 14-20, USD was able to close the gap with several defensive stops. A Karim Rowson free throw made it 25-24 at the 7:46 mark, giving USD it’s first lead of the game.

This would be the only time the Coyotes held the lead, as Iowa sophomore Aaron White responded with a jumper on the Hawkeye’s following possession.

After several back and forth possessions, Trevor Gruis connected on a two-point jumper with 4:46 left in the first half, cutting the Coyotes’ deficit down to 29-30.

The Hawkeyes gained momentum with a pair of back-to-back slam dunks by first-years Adam Woodbury and Anthony Clemmons, and finished the half on a 15-3 run.

Iowa came out of the gates hot in the second half, not allowing the Coyotes to regain any momentum and went on to outscore USD 42-31 in the second half on their way to the 87-63 win.

However, the unavoidable statistic of the game would come from the rebounding category. USD was dominated off the boards and was outrebounded 28-50 in the game.

Following Tuesday’s game the Coyotes average just 33.

6 rebounds per game, ranking 240th in the country in total rebounds.

Junior center Trevor Gruis has been the Coyotes lead rebounder during the 2012-13 season, and on Tuesday he put up a solid performance against Iowa, scoring 16 points while shooting a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line.

First-year guard Casey Kasperbauer tacked on another 14 points of the Coyotes.

Where the Coyotes fell short was defending Iowa sophomore forward James White who put up a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, while junior Roy Devyn Marble added another 14 points and eight rebounds.

Coyote standout senior guard Juevol Myles, who prior to Tuesday led all Coyotes in points and assists, averaging 15.8 and 4.5 in each respective category.

However, Myles struggled Tuesday night against the Hawkeyes being held to eight points and just two-for-12 shooting.

The Coyotes will look to regain momentum when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to go up against the Ball State Cardinals (2-4) Friday, who will be fresh off a match-up against Holy Cross.
