Arctic Monkeys’ new album is worth hype
The Arctic Monkeys are one of the most exciting bands out there right now. They’ve had their hands full since playing the 2012 Summer Olympics to an audience of millions, teasing their new release “AM” with three singles and headlining arguably the year’s best show, Glastonbury 2013. The Arctic Monkeys aren’t new to the game, but it’s exciting to know there’s a lot in store for them.
On “AM,” the Arctic Monkeys show their brilliance. If one word could describe “AM,” it would be groovy. Arctic Monkeys create an amalgam of groovy riffs along with the Monkeys’ original style. The Arctic Monkeys pulled this album off with enough British swagger to make up for their last album, “Suck It and See,” which didn’t appeal to all their fans. The Monkeys’ channeled their inner rock star and pumped out these songs with teddy boy flare — picture the British version of greasers-leather jack and pompadour guys.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner (guitarist/singer) is a poet, a modern day Jim Morrison. He seamlessly crafts songs, and the first tracks off of “AM” hit hard. “AM” is full of witty lyrics and poetic lines. “Been wondering if your heart’s still open and if so I wanna know what time it shuts/ Simmer down and pucker up”, “She’s a silver lining lone ranger riding through an open space/ In my mind when she’s not there beside me I go crazy.” and “I wanna be your vacuum cleaner/breath in your dust” are just a few lines that illustrate his talent.
During the middle of the album, the mood changes and shows off the Monkeys’ romantic side. “Mad Sounds’ ” oh la la las even made me swoon. The tracks kick up again till the end of “AM.”
