University of South Dakota men’s basketball coach Dave Boots announced his retirement Tuesday afternoon, ending a 25-year tenure with the Coyotes.

In a released statement, Boots said he enjoyed his time at USD but felt it was time to move on.

“For the past 25 years, I have enjoyed leading the Coyote basketball program. The time has come for a new face and new voice to now lead,” Boots said.

USD Athletic Director David Herbster thanked Boots for his services as USD head coach.

“I appreciate everything that Dave Boots has done for USD, Coyote athletics and our basketball program. Timing is never ideal and I know he didn’t reach this decision without careful thought and consideration,” Herbster said.

Boots leaves USD as the coach with the most wins in program history with a 503-235 record, giving him a .681 winning percentage.

He led the Coyotes to 23 consecutive winning seasons from 1989-201, 10 NCAA Division II tournament appearances and six North Central Conference championships.

At the time of the release, University of South Dakota Sports Information said there were no new developments to add to the press release, and Boots would not be holding a press conference following his announcement.
