Disney adds another classic film to the vault
Disney has given us another timeless classic to add to its resume.
Enter “Frozen.”
The movie starts with a new Mickey Mouse short “Get A Horse,” except it did not look new. The animation style and coloring is reminiscent of Walt Disney’s earliest days, before Pete throws Mickey out of the screen. That being said, a chorus of laughter cannot be avoided watching this cartoon.
Now, as for the movie. The animation is nothing short of spectacular, with the winter landscape and details of the ice being the biggest highlight.
Equally amazing as the animation is the story. For what seems like the first time in Disney history, the protagonist is not the main focus in the film. While the hero is supposed to be the optimistic Anna, voiced and sung by Kristen Bell, the film concentrates more on her older sister, Elsa. Elsa is born with the power of ice that plagues her with fear and self-doubt from childhood all the way to her coronation.
The themes of “sisterly love” and “fear is power” are so perfectly married that they do not resort to predictability. Although Elsa is an antagonist in that she is capable of hurting someone with her power, she is not the villain. Actually, we keep guessing at who the villain really is, which sets the mystery baddie apart from the rest of Disney’s rogues gallery like Scar, Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella de Vil, to name a few.
What is a Disney classic without a memorable side character? In this case, it is an anthropomorphized snowman named Olaf, whose motivation is to feel the heat of summer. That was one irony I have never seen before, so kudos to that.
While the story, the animation, and the characters are all solid, the film’s biggest highlights are the songs. While my favorite is definitely the comical love song “Fixer Upper,” the best one without doubt is “Let It Go.” Idina Menzel’s voice was really amazing in that song, and the visuals were just as stupendous.
Disney’s “Frozen” is a cold film with a very warm heart.
