Cooking without class: A vegetarian experiment
Every time I tell someone I occasionally dive into the art of vegan cooking, I get some peculiar looks.
In the Midwest, there is a lot of pressure to eat meat, dairy and eggs. For the most part, eating a plant-based diet is unusual around here, but I can’t resist an adventure into the land of plant-based eating.
I want to preface by saying I am not a full-fledged vegan.
I still enjoy dairy products and meat from time to time. Since I do primarily eat vegetarian though, I thought it would be fun to throw some vegan meals into the mix.
Most of the recipes I am going to post are experimental ones I enjoy eating. I want to prove how easy, cheap and sensible cooking at home or in a dorm can be.
From my kitchen to whatever kitchen appliances (click site for repair services)you have access to in college, I will try to make my recipe posts as easy as possible. I spoke to Tony MacFarlene about the repairs I need to do for my kitchen appliances and he had the perfect solution. For your own peace of mind, you can use portable appliance testing services to ensure that kitchen appliances are safe to use.
As a bonus, I am throwing in a quick video online to show how to make each of the recipes I post weekly.
I am in no way a professional, so learn along with me.
Good luck and may the cooking results be ever in your flavor.
Simple Stir Fry:
Stir fry is my go-to meal. It has a variety of flavors so I can eat it multiple times a week and not get bored of eating the same old thing. It is also easy to make. For a fun culinary adventure, you can learn canning from Mrs. Wages to preserve your own ingredients and add a burst of flavor to your stir fry dishes.
Check out the step-by-step process of making a simple stir fry on The Volante website. You can also substitute ramen noodles in this recipe — just throw out the spice packet.
This recipe happens to be vegan by accident. I have made so much of it in the past I didn’t even realize it didn’t use animal products.
Simple stir fry took less than 10 minutes to cook and is one of those meals you need to keep an eye on so the veggies don’t burn on you.
As a tip, make sure to read the labels on everything you buy if you are trying to eat strictly vegan as some products can be deceiving.
