Canadian singer grooves his way into America
Canadian singer Mac Demarco is grooving his way into the American music scene with help from his new album “Salad Days.”
Discovered in a laundry mat, Demarco’s music can appeal to a wide variety of listeners and has taken over the indie scene. Starting off as the lead guitarist for “Makeout Videotape,” Demarco has come further than he expected since those days, reaching a status where he is known simply by his first name.
While listening to “Salad Days,” it is obvious Demarco has a message behind his music. Dishing out advice every chance he gets, many of his songs are directed at relationship advice.
“Treat Her Better” showcases Demarco’s views on how to treat a significant other.
The track that really got to me on his album was “My Kind of Woman,” since I got to sing it on stage with Demarco himself.
Attending one of his concerts this summer, I was able to experience my dreams. Being front row at any concert has its perks, but for this one I was literally two feet away from him.
Before he even started playing, he approached me and we engaged in a flirty conversation. At this point I was freaking out but still trying to maintain my cool.
It wasn’t until halfway through the actual show that Demarco pulled me up on stage and asked me to sing “My Kind of Woman” with him. If that wasn’t enough, Demarco treated me like the woman in his song, giving me a hug on stage and an invitation to the after-party.
Demarco is an easy listen — his songs aren’t too dancy but also not too calm. Playing with open chords and groovy beats, Demarco’s music is as unique as he is.
That said, placing him into a category along with other indie singers almost feels wrong. The music Demarco creates is something you have never heard before, yet somehow contains something for you to connect to.
Leaving behind “Makeout Videotape,” Demarco was able to focus on his solo career. His first album “Rock and Roll Night Club” makes an interesting impression on its listeners.
It was clear that his first album was just a test, full of goofy songs that lacked any seriousness. However, his next two albums contained maturity that really put Demarco on the map.
With his third album released in April, Demarco takes on the seriousness of life — just a gap-toothed sweetheart with love on his mind and an emotional song in his heart.
Besides his music, Demarco is famous for his raunchy, goofy personality. Teaming up with Tyler, The Creator, Demarco stars in the music video “Granny” on the television show “The Loiter Squad.”
Aside from the obvious effects on my life, Demarco has reached thousands of fans across the world with his poetic lyrics, goofy personality and soulful sound.
