USD Foundation hosts postcard design contest
Students now have a chance to get their photos on a postcard.
The USD Foundation is holding a postcard contest with paintings created by students in the art department. The painting must be of a winter scene of a well-known building on campus.
“The postcard will be 5”x7” and while the painting does not need to be that small, it should be in that ratio,” said Cory Knedler, chair of the art department. “Any painting media will be accepted.”
The Foundation held a similar photo contest last spring, and students who participated had to submit photographs of campus buildings or sculptures.
“Erin Cullison won the contest and her photograph was printed as a USD greeting card with her name on the back” Knedler said.
Her photo was focused on the Legacy Statue with the blurred image of Old Main in the background.
“My inspiration for the photo came to me pretty easily,” Cullison said, who is a junior graphic design major. “I actually took the first photo on a pretty dreary day, so once they had picked out the semi-finalists I had to retake the same one so it looked more like springtime.”
This year, painting students have the opportunity to enter.
“I am considering the post card contest, because I think it’s a great opportunity to have an artwork seen by both a large number of and variety of people,” painting major Marci Smith said. “As an artist, I’m always looking for ways to promote my work.”
The deadline for the digital version of the paintings is Nov. 20. After the painting has been chosen, the USD Foundation will pay the artist $200. The original artwork can stay with the artist.
