Coyote women continue winning games, prepare for tournament

After a resounding 71-48 victory over Oral Roberts, the only team to beat the USD women in Summit League play, the Coyotes only have four games remaining before the Summit League tournament.

After losing to Oral Roberts the first time out, the win helped show an improvement for the Coyotes. Senior guard Nicole Seekamp helped to highlight the improvement with a big 17-point, five-assist performance against the Golden Eagles.

“We felt good about the win because we had a better focus going into this game than the last time we played them and were able to improve on the things that we didn’t do so well when we played there,” she said.

This week the Coyotes will take on Western Illinois and South Dakota State at home. Last time out USD had no trouble with the Leathernecks, taking them down 102-77, but they know it’s important not to overlook any team. With State sitting so close on the horizon, the team wants to make sure Western Illinois doesn’t slip through the cracks.

“It is very important not to overlook Western Illinois. Coach [Williams] always tells us that the most important game is the next one on our schedule and for us that is Western. They are a great team and we need to prepare for what they are going to bring on Thursday,” Seekamp said. “Once that game is over we will focus our attention on State.”

Following the Leathernecks, the Coyotes will play host to in-state rival South Dakota State. USD managed to down the Jackrabbits the last time out in Brookings 63-58. That was the first win for the Coyote women in Frost Arena since 1990.

With the away win against State in hand, the Coyotes could look to gain the first season sweep of SDSU in recent memory. Seekamp said she knows getting too wrapped up in the drama of the State match-up would be a mistake for the team.

“We aren’t focusing our attention on getting a season sweep over State. Every game we go out to win, so this game is no different,” Seekamp said. “We will approach it the same way, focus on the things that we can control and the result should take care of itself.”

Senior guard Tia Hemiller is looking forward to the crowd the rivalry will bring to the DakotaDome, especially considering it’s the last one the facility will ever see.

“We will have to be solid on defense and knock down big shots. It will be nice that we will have a huge crowd behind us. It’s going to be a fun experience,” Hemiller said.

“It will be the last rivalry game played in the DakotaDome.”

USD takes on Western Illinois Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the DakotaDome. They follow up the Leathernecks with a visit from SDSU on Saturday. Tip-off time is set for 2 p.m. These will be the last two games the women play in the DakotaDome.

“These two games will be the last two games I get to play in the Dome, so I am going to cherish every second,” Hemiller said. “I cannot wait for the two upcoming games.”
