De-stressing in college is beneficial, leads to calm mind

College isn’t a walk in the park, and it’s certainly not something people should take lightly if they choose to attend.

I was an example of what not to do. I thought being in college was just high school with the exception that I just had to pay for it. Turns out, it definitely is like high school, but it’s jam packed with so much stuff to learn in shorter amounts of time.

I changed my major and minor only last year, luckily it wasn’t much later, otherwise I really would’ve been even more stressed out.

While trying to manage time for my homework and other responsibilities, it seems almost impossible to sit down and just breathe.

One reason why it’s hard for me to not be neurotic over everything in school is partly due to the fact that I despise general education unless it pertains to my major, which in my case is English. Courses such as mathematics or science have only caused my brain to suffer, and for that, I’ve been induced to unnecessary amounts of anxiety.

I highly doubt I’m alone in these feelings of stress, because if college students know anything, it’s stress.

There are definitely ways to combat stress whilst in college, and many have helped me be less tired, less frantic and less scared.

For starters, my mother is probably the best person who’s always told me to get stuff done without trying to sugarcoat anything. Sometimes that ounce of encouragement is all it takes for me to get back in my zone and continue to try and not fail in college.

So, talking to my mother has helped me, partly because my relationship with her is always about doing well and trying hard at everything, but also because she’s always helped me not stress out over silly things.

Talking to people isn’t always my ideal way to de-stress, but sometimes it’s good to just let it out rather than keeping it all in.

On the contrary, I feel it’s also a great idea to have alone time. Getting out of a crowded environment and just going to my room to sleep, watch television or go on my computer has saved me many head explosions for sure.

Taking on a hobby that keeps me busy has also been a great de-stresser. I’ve taking up activities such as origami, reading, painting my nails or crafts. Just having time to myself while also not thinking only of college clears my head and simultaneously prepares me for whatever responsibility I have to tackle.

The worst possible thing a student can do is avoid their responsibilities. Everyone’s done it, and it’s never been a great idea.

Not completing assignments on time, missing classes or procrastinating until the latest date are obviously not smart ideas, but almost everyone’s guilty of it, including myself.

But all those things cause are more stress, so I strongly encourage not following that path and realizing college is expensive, so it should remain a priority.

I always have to tell myself I’m here for a reason, and I’m going to be in debt for many, many years, so I should be the college student I want to be and try my hardest, but also learn to calm down and not freak out over everything.

It’s easier said than done, but passing classes is one of the best feelings in the world. It makes me realize it’ll be done before I know it, so stressing out is pointless and will only hold me back.
