Students seek medical services at Sanford
Students can find services for most health issues at Sanford student health.
Sanford is located three blocks southeast of campus at 20 S. Plum Street. Services are open to students from 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday though Friday and 8:30-11:30 on Saturday.
If you can’t make it into the clinic, the Sanford Vermillion Clinic also offers diagnosis and prescribed treatment for common conditions over the internet. Some of these conditions include, pink eye, sunburn, Athlete’s Foot and sinus problems. This service can be accessed though a My Sanford Chart account.
While the clinic is available there are also ways to avoid getting sick. Living in the small spaces of college dorms can make it easy to catch what everyone else on your floor has but there are ways to get around getting sick.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the best ways to avoid the common cold are hand washing, disinfecting, using tissues, not sharing drinks and drinking lots of water.
Hand washing is the most important. Clean your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water, if soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Disinfecting helps to keep germs from multiplying. Clean your desk and hard surfaces in your dorm room with Clorox wipes once a week.
Cough and sneeze into tissues and throw them away. It helps to carry a small pack in your backpack so you always have one for yourself or the person you sit next to in class.
Don’t share drinking glasses or utensils with your friends or roommate. If you or your roommate gets sick use a disposable cup and label it so the other person doesn’t accidentally use it.
Liquids are also very important. You should be drinking at least two liters of water every day.
Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are also helpful at lowering stress, which keeps colds away.
Even if you do all of these things you still may get sick. If you do get sick you can call Student health at 605-677-3700 to schedule an appointment.
